We planted 6 sample beds sized 7 m2 in wooden frames with different substrate depths (20, 30 and 40 cm) in 2018. We would like to examine how the same combination of plants grows in different substrate depths. We are testing 2 substrate variants within individual depths. The base is the substrate VULKAHUM MIX 60 from the company Humko d.o.o., Bled. We used pure substrate in one trial field and added the bio-renewable glass wool binder from the company Knauf Insulation d.o.o., Škofja Loka in the other. The company uses this binder in their Green Systems all around the world.
We will measure the quantity of water on individual fields and will examine the growth of the same combination of plants.
The fields are planted with snowy mespilus (Amelanchier lamarckii), pines (Pinus mugo) and perennials like Kniphofia, Euphorbia, Nepeta, Salvia,Aster and some other. Spring flowering bulbs were added as well.
Our aim is to examine how the same combination of plants grows in different depths and qualities of substrate.
The results of these comparisons will be mainly important information when designing abandoned industrial sites, intensive green roofs and areas with a low quantity of fertile soil.
